So what is the Hit the Road Dude meme about?

Updated:

Short answer

It is a meme from a TikTok clip posted on 21 August 2025: an older man in a white pickup scolds an angler, scoffs “State?” at the excuse that the pond is state property, then orders “Hit the road, dude.” From October 2026 people made AI versions starring themselves, pets and characters.

The original clip

A man sits in a white pickup truck by a pond. He asks who allowed the angler to fish there, hears “I thought this was state property”, answers “State?” in disbelief and waves the angler off. The angler stays off camera.

The clip was posted on TikTok on 21 August 2025, and Know Your Meme records about 13.7 million views in roughly three weeks. We do not name the man in the clip or the poster, and our template does not recreate him.

How the AI version spread

A lip-sync copy appeared a few days after the original. From early October 2026 people used AI video tools to put other drivers in the seat: pets, game characters, new vehicles and new places. The same beats survived in every version.

Several names circulate for the same clip, including State Property and Lock ’Em Up. The meaning guide lists them.

The beats every version shares

  • A driver leans out of a vehicle window, jabbing a finger at the camera, and demands to know who allowed this.
  • An off-camera voice makes an excuse about state property.
  • The driver repeats “State?” in disbelief, then “This?”.
  • An arm points down the road and the driver says “Hit the road, dude. This is private property.”
  • A last close-up, and the question: “What is your name anyway?”
