Where does the Ozil goal meme come from?

Updated:

Short answer

People replay a famous 2016 Champions League winner with an AI-made stand-in as the scorer, such as a dinosaur or a grandmother. The remakes caught on in early October 2026, and a US newspaper picked the story up on 19 October. Tip Toe AI lets you build your own from a photo.

The goal behind the meme

Arsenal travelled to Sofia, Bulgaria, to face Ludogorets on 1 November 2016 in a Champions League group game. They trailed 2–0 and turned it around to win 3–2.

Late on, in minute 87, Mesut Özil broke clear by himself. He chipped the keeper, the defenders chasing him slid by, and he rolled the ball into the open net. Every remake copies this moment.

How the AI remakes spread

In early October 2026, creators began using AI video tools to swap someone else in for Özil. A T-rex and other dinosaurs, grandmothers and video game characters were the favourite stand-ins.

Millions watched those clips, and USA Today ran a piece on the trend on 19 October 2026. View counts keep moving and vary by platform, which is why we don't print an exact figure.

What every remake keeps

  • A scorer breaks clear and beats the keeper with one unhurried touch.
  • Two defenders go to ground and miss.
  • The ball rolls, slowly and without fuss, into the empty goal.

Questions people ask

What year was Özil's goal?

2016, to be exact: 1 November, minute 87 of a Champions League group tie in Sofia that Arsenal won 3–2 away to Ludogorets.

Is the dinosaur version genuine footage?

Not at all. The dinosaur, grandma and game-character clips are all AI edits, and none of them is match footage.

Is the Ozil goal an official app?

No. It's a trend, not a product. Lots of people and sites make versions, and Tip Toe AI is simply one independent tool among them.

Is the real match clip used on this site?

No. Everything Tip Toe AI outputs is newly generated from your photo. It contains no broadcast footage and never shows real players, kits or badges.
